Whirlpool : WTW57ESVW 27in Top-Load Washer with 3.5 cu. ft. Capacity White Review

Whirlpool : WTW57ESVW 27in Top-Load Washer with 3.5 cu. ft. Capacity WhiteWhirlpool usually makes good products, but this one has problems. We installed the first one, it broke down after 4 days.Got the second one in, it broke down in about the same timeframe.Got the third one in, it lasted for one and a half loads.Had a repairman come this time to find out what the problem was.Turns out we have either too low or too high water pressure. The automatic load sensing mechanism burns up in either case. Why didn't they put a regulator on the water line if they knew it would do this???

Also, the automatic load sensing does not work on small loads - the washer just fills up to the top.I would not recommend this model - save yourself some money and headaches and get a more basic (and more reliable) model. In this case, the added features mean added opportunity for failure.

Whirlpool WFW9150WW Duet 27" 4.0 Cu. Ft. White Front Load Washer - WFW9150WW, Review

Whirlpool WFW9150WW Duet 27' 4.0 Cu. Ft. White Front Load Washer - WFW9150WW,I just had a Whirlpool front-loader washing machine delivered last week that has yet to wash a load of clothes. It is defective with such wiring and motor problems that the technician sent to fix it said the machine should never have passed inspection. Whirlpool has agreed to pay for the parts to fix the machine, when the parts are no longer backordered. I want to return the machine because I have no guarantee something else won't go wrong as soon as they fix this problem. Whoever heard of buying an expensive brand new washing machine that doesn't work? I hate Whirlpool and will never in my entire life buy another Whirlpool or Maytag product. EVER! I highly recommend you buy another brand of washing machine. I sure wish I had.

Samsung Washer With Front Load Steam 1200 RPM 4.3 Cu Ft VRT. - White With Chrome Trim Review

Samsung Washer With Front Load Steam 1200 RPM 4.3 Cu Ft VRT. - White With Chrome TrimI picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago and have turned into a laundry geek. I went from a top loader to this and have been amazed at how much: less water and soap it uses, longer it takes to run, less lint comes off the clothes in the dryer (gentle), cleaner the clothes are, active care (formerly known as silver care) works.
Don't expect to see your clothes sloshing around in water on this or any front loader I have seen. The first time I wondered if it was working as you can't see water. The clothes do get wet, and even better, very clean. I have cut back on the detergent I put in as anything near what the detergent maker says to put in leaves to clothes feeling soapy. Makes sense though, less water would need less detergent.
It does take a while to run, around an hour for the normal cycle, a bit over an hour if you say "heavy" on the soil. When I say run, this thing goes through cycles slowly. I don't watch it all the time but sometimes it is sitting, then spins, then sits. Whatever, it works. There are some quicker settings if you really need to rush it, though I haven't tried them.
There is very little lint in the dryer lint trap with this washer which I assume means it is taking it easy on the fabric, not breaking it down. I would say it is probably 15-20% of the lint as before (an 80-85% reduction). I have asked other front load owners if they had the same experience and they all seemed to have to think about it but said, yes, less lint.
As far as the cleanliness of the clothes, this thing does the job. My whites weren't looking so white before but are coming back around. The active care which uses silver ions to disinfect the clothes does a great job. I do Bikram Yoga, 90 minutes in a hot room, and sweat like crazy. Hot water shrinks the towels and my clothes too much to use so active care to the rescue. It really does take the odor out while using warm or cold water (though living in Arizona the "cold" water isn't all that cold).
There is a learning curve with this, one that I haven't completed. You can adjust the water temp for washing and for rinsing, the speed of the spin cycle, extra rinse, extra wash, etc. I didn't have a real fancy top loader so this is all new and great for me. Also, it does take a few seconds as it goes into the spin cycle to balance. During these 2-3 seconds it can seem it is going to be out of balance but it figures it out and smooths out.
I'm very satisfied with the washer. I don't have the matching dryer so can't speak to that. Also, two weeks of ownership I have no idea what the quality is. The delivery guy said that Samsung has seemed to do well with the front loaders, then went on to name some other brands that seemed to be trouble. Time will tell. The electronics worry me some but we'll see.

Maytag White Top Load Washer Review

Maytag White Top Load WasherOver the past decade, Maytag's reputation has really gone in the tank. Since Whirlpool bought them in 2008 things have looked up in the overall ratings from JD Power and Consumer Reports. I bought this unit the day after Thanksgiving and if I could go back, I would buy something else. It is quiet and I have had no problems with any of the features, except the auto water level. In half of the loads it stops filling to early and the clothes do not get cleaned properly. We have called and they have instructed us exactly how to load the machine and we read the instructions, we have two BA and a Master Degree - my wife and I know how to do laundry, and still it does not always work right. It is a real pain when after a full cycle there are towels that have dry spots on them, or jeans that do not come clean, or our kids clothes that are not getting as clean as they can. The worst part is there is no over-ride; you are stuck with this feature. So now we stand there and continually open the lid while it fills which resets the auto feature. If we do that 2-3 times it fully fills and stuff gets clean. If the machine fills, it washes really well, is quiet, and so far has been acceptable after 6 weeks. But when it does not fill correctly - WORTHLESS! And we bought the matching dryer - it is dead as we wait for the repairman who is coming in 8 days! Go elsewhere!

Frigidaire : FMP330RGB 18in Stainless Steel Interior Portable Dishwasher Review

Frigidaire : FMP330RGB 18in Stainless Steel Interior Portable DishwasherAfter moving into my new place, I decided it was time to get rid of the Danby countertop dishwasher and get a standing, 18" portable. I'd always seen the countertop model as a stopgap, because most apartments I could afford didn't have a lot of countertop, but the Danby did well for me during the time I used it.

I'd had an 18" Sears Kenmore portable about 20 years ago, and was planning on purchasing another Kenmore because I'd been quite pleased with that one. Then I received a $500 bonus from work, in the form of an Amazon gift certificate, so I decided to give up on Sears and see what I could get through Amazon.I found this Frigidaire, which seemed to have reasonably good reviews at other sites, and ordered it.

On first blush, it was a lot like my old Kenmore, except the upper rack had an additional, fold-down shelf for small glasses.Once I started using it, tho, I was disabused of the hope that it would be an improvement over my old Kenmore, or even over the Danby. Its drawbacks are:

1. It is loud.Keep you awake at night loud.
2. The racks are so poorly designed that I can't stack bowls in the lower level unless I leave 2-3 empty 'slots' between them. The upper rack has enough space to accommodate bowls, but not enough prongs to hold them in place so the spray can hit them properly.Furthermore, the extra level on the upper rack is useless since even the manual warns you not to block the spray by stacking items immediately above one another. This means that you have only one level there, rather than the 2 levels you initially anticipate.
3. The lower level design may be intentional, because the water spray is underpowered. If I stack dishes too closely, the spray doesn't reach between them, and the top half of the plate or bowl remains dirty.
4. The rack problem combined with the low pressure water spray to make it impossible to fully load the dishwasher.I can do about 3 place settings in a load - just about the same amount I could do with the much smaller Danby.
5. The water hoses and electrical cord depend on friction to hold them in place, meaning that I have to stuff them back through a small opening into their storage space after using the unit.Dragging the hoses & cord back out causes them to scrape against the opening, and it looks to me like that will shorten the life of the rubber/plastic coverings.I've decided to leave the electric cord hanging out, but the water hoses need to be stored to keep them from dripping. My old Kenmore had internal reels for these two items, making it easy to pull them out and put them back.

The one plus that the Frigidaire has over either of my two previous units is that it does have a "Hi Temp" setting, which heats the water during the cycle. This is important since the water in the building pipes doesn't stay hot between the stages of the cycle. The Hi Temp setting uses more energy, but does get the dishes cleaner than they were when I didn't use it.

All in all, I wouldn't purchase this product again.I do prefer having an automatic dishwasher to doing all the dishes by hand, so when I purchase my next dishwasher, I'm going to take bowls and plates with me to test the rack design and, if it's a portable, I'll look for a better cord management mechanism. The other problems probably can't be assessed in a showroom, so I'll just have to hope someone else writes a detailed review of the product I'm interested in before I purchase it.

Miele W4000 Series : W4840 27in Front Load Washer Review

Miele W4000 Series : W4840 27in Front Load WasherI am posting a revised review of the Miele W4840/T9820.The reason is, I want to revise my score upward.(Fair is fair.) I include the original review for reference below.

I stand by my original assessment of these products, EXCEPT, I was very fortunate that my Miele dryer had a recall.(I am not kidding about this). After a few false starts, the Miele repair guy came out with a firmware change for the dryer.I complained to him that the washer was not getting my clothes clean, and I discovered that there are TWO PAGES of firmware options available to be set by a repair technician. These options include "hygiene" and "allergies", each of which increases the amount of water used in the wash.

Turning on these two options, my washing machine now uses enough water to get my clothes clean. What a concept!

I have 2 things I want to accomplish by re-writing this review.First, if you already own a Miele W4840, and if you agree that the clothes aren't getting clean enough because of too little water is used, you need to know that THERE IS A FIX.Second, if you have the hots for a Miele and are just smitten with the idea of the quality and reliability, my advice is to get them to CHANGE THE FIRMWARE FROM THE GET-GO, so that the clothes are actually immersed in water. Otherwise, you're headed for my initial experience.

My opinion on the dryer hasn't changed a bit.

I think I figured out the problem with Miele USA.When I filled out my warranty registration, and mailed it in, they mixed up my phone number, which is my account number. So any service requests just went straight to the circular file.

Here is the original review.I still think it accurately represents what you will get if you buy a unit is the "stock" firmware settings:

I soooo wanted to like this washer/dryer set (W4840/T9820). I shop for quality and reliability, and am willing to pay a significant price premium to get it. On top of that, I have a Miele dishwasher and I love it. So when my Maytag got elderly, the skids were greased for Miele Nirvana. Alas, it was not to happen. Its not that this product is terrible, it is just that it is not that great, across the board.

I had a very minor warranty failure, and my experience tells me that if you have any real problems, you're hosed. I just had a burned out LED indicator on the dryer. Called the Miele office in NJ. Got the big stall/phone tag/shuck and jive. Eventually, I asked them to just mail me an LED and tell me how to fix it. Nope. After several phone calls, and a no-show appointment (over a period of 6 weeks), I just gave up. My dryer has a burned out indicator. That's just the way it is. Not the biggest thing in the world, but for $3700+ delivered, I figured they could stand behind the warranty. Nope. Warranty performance = F.

Just speculation, but I'll bet that non-warranty repair is a nightmare. There are so few of these sold that probably there are very few people with repair experience, and there is probably not an adequate stock of spare parts. Just a guess.

My biggest beef is that it doesn't wash the clothes all that well. Now, this is my first experience with Energy Saving front loaders, so maybe this is life after going Green, but the bottom line is that I'd rather have my old Maytag top loader. I think that Miele just went so berserk trying to save water that they lost sight of the fact that the purchaser buys this product to get his clothes clean. I have resorted to using the extra prewash cycle for everything, and the extra rinse to get the soap out. To me, this is kind of like the first low-flow toilets, where you get to flush twice. Cleaning performance = B-

The dryer doesn't work all that great, either. Everything is based on a moisture sensor (no simple timer mode), and my experience is that things either come out damp (normal mode) or over-dried and shrunk (extra dry mode). I have resorted to running everything on normal mode/gentle heat and then letting the dryer run in fluff/no wrinkle mode for a while (an extra 30 minutes or so) in attempt to get dry but not shrunk clothes. Drying performance = D.

Both the washer and the dryer are incredibly energy efficient. I saw a noticeable drop in my utility bill. Energy saving performance = A (until you start adding back extra cycles to get things clean).

The controls are needlessly complicated. You feel like a space shuttle pilot getting ready to dock at the space station. It's not that you can't figure it out, but why should you have to? User interface: C-

Now, in all honesty, I have to say that other than the LED indicator, nothing else has failed in 2 years of regular use (2 adults, no kids). Both units seem to be very well made, and I think (hope?) it is not pipe-dreaming to expect that these units will last for a long time. If they do, however, it will be a mixed blessing, since they just don't work all that well.

I just can't believe that this is as good as it gets for a $3700 washer/dryer.

Product Description:
At the very core of Miele's technical and production competencies are washing machines. Having more experience than almost any other appliance company on the planet, Miele has taken the washing machine in Europe, and around the world, to the highest level of durability, reliability and convenience while always remembering the product's potential impact on their cherished natural resources.

Stainless steel Honeycomb wash drum
Forged from the very best stainless steel with a unique convex pattern that resembles a honeycomb, the drum enhances both cleaning performance and reduces fabric wear. The by-product of this patented advancement is an 80% reduction in the number of water exit holes and a network of water channels that create a thin water layer that cushions your clothes while the drum rotates.

PC Update function
Miele was the first manufacturer to introduce the revolutionary concept of updatable machines. Thanks to the PC Update function, you can now keep up with technological advances. For example, using a laptop computer, a Miele technician can alter a machine's programming parameters to reduce its electricity consumption or even adapt it for a new type of garment care.

Advanced Touchtronic Controls
Most people own a very diverse range of clothing, linen, tableware and so on, all requiring different, special treatments. From silks and blended items to woolens and mixed fabric garments, you can clean these items easily, effectively and most importantly, with great care. Miele's Touchtronic series offers more to clean silks and other delicate hand washables you would normally dry clean.

Bosch Nexxt 500 Plus Series: WFMC544 27" Front-Load Washer with 4.2 cu. ft. Capacity, 15 Wash Progr Review

Bosch Nexxt 500 Plus Series: WFMC544 27' Front-Load Washer with 4.2 cu. ft. Capacity, 15 Wash ProgrWe purchased this washer, matching dryer and pedestals about six months ago from a local appliance store. The dryer works fine. Both appliances look great, sturdy and well-built.The problem is the washer does not get the cloths clean. My white stocks, T shirts and other white cloths come out stained and gray. We had a standard Maytag for 20 years that got the clothes nice and clean. This washer simply doesn't do the job. After numerous contacts with the company, there appears to be no solution. I can't, in all honesty, sell this product to an unknowing buyer. Our only solution at this time is to buy a new washer and matching dryer and consign this one to the dump. So long to $2,200 plus.

LG : WM0742HGA 27in XL Front-Load Steam Washer - Pearl Grey Review

LG : WM0742HGA 27in XL Front-Load Steam Washer - Pearl GreyI was reluctant to make the move from a top-loading washer to a front-loader, mainly because of the horror stories I'd heard from other moms about mildew issues in front-loading machines.I'm glad I made the change, because this LG Steamwasher is terrific. There are a wide variety of load options and times, from a quick rinse and spin to a allergy-fighting steam clean. It has a big enough interior to wash a 5x7 rug or a king-sized comforter. The barrel is stainless steel.

Unless it is really dirty, most regular home laundry can be done on a short 30 minute cycle. The machine weighs the clothes once the door is shut and determines the appropriate amount of water for the cycle. A full load in this front-loader is about double the wash capacity of our old top-loading machine...so I spend a lot less time in the laundry room and more time with my family.

Detergent, bleach, prewash and fabric softener are added through an easy-to-reach door on top of the machine. Since it is a front-loader this machine does require a low-sudsing detergent formulated for a "he" (high efficiency) washer; the good news is, HE detergents cost about the same as regular detergents, but you will use a fraction of the amount a top-loading machine needs. On a standard 30-minute wash cycle with a full load of clothes, I use about three tablespoons of detergent and a tablespoon of liquid fabric softener.

There are a few things to get used to: unlike a top loader where you can open the lid after the machine is filling and throw in a few extras, for a front loader it is necessary to pause the cycle and wait for the auto door lock to disengage (this takes about 5 seconds). Once the last load of the day is finished, mildew issues can be avoided by wiping the front seal and inner door with a paper towel. I generally also leave the door open for an hour after the last load is finished to facilitate any additional water evaporation.

The best part is, our water bills have plummeted. Our top-loading machine used an average of 40 gallons per load (20 for the wash, 20 more for the rinse cycle). The LG Steamcleaner uses about 12 total, and the laundry load capacity has doubled. Be sure you have a solid subfloor if you are considering this machine; it has an industrial weight motor which is extremely heavy and requires stability for its spin cycle, which can reach 1200 RPM. This machine is Energy Star rated.

Samsung : WF328AAR 4.0 cu. ft. Front Load Washer - Tango Red Review

Samsung : WF328AAR 4.0 cu. ft. Front Load Washer - Tango RedI have had this washer for almost a year and a half and i'm completely in love with it.The capacity is absolutely amazing. You can pack it to the brim and it will clean everything thoroughly. I don't even pretreat stains anymore. The matching dryer is equally amazing as it will dry everything perfectly in no time.We bought the set knowing we would have to stack them (yes they are stackable if you buy the stacking kit) and we got the pedestals for free but we unfortunately had to store those under a bed until we moved. The high spin barely makes any noise and it does NOT walk across the floor like some of the other brands. The vibration reduction system works beautifully. In fact, when the spin cycle just starts you can see a little wiggle if you watch it but then it smooths out and your clothes come out with practically no water in them. I also absolutely love the silver care feature. This allows me to sanitize the washcloths that i use on my face without using a whole tank of hot water. It simply passes the water over silver plates to clean out the bacteria.I also love the delay start feature. If i don't want to wait up on a load to put it in the dryer i can just set it so that it will go off a couple hours before i wake up.That way the clothes don't set in the washer wet all night and smell musty in the morning.

I can't say enough good things about this washer. In fact, if my washer broke today i would buy it all over again. I've enjoyed using it so much.

LG : WM2601HR 27in Front-Load Washer with 4.5 cu. ft. Capacity Wild Cherry Red Review

LG : WM2601HR 27in Front-Load Washer with 4.5 cu. ft. Capacity Wild Cherry RedFront load washers and dryers require a PEDESTAL to raise
the loading door to a comfortable height unless you want
to be on your knees to load the machine.

LG manufactures PEDESTALS for their machines, however
they do not warrant them!If the PEDESTAL collapses or
the DRAWER doesn't close or stay shut, LG will not fix it
or replace it.They say the PEDESTALis an accessory!
A cheap plastic piece holds the DRAWERS shut, and LG
would not even help on this problem.

For this reason,I will never buy another LG product of
any kind!

Koblenz Portable Washer Review

Koblenz Portable WasherPros:

This unit, which uses an impeller rather than a central agitator, holds more clothes than you'd guess. It's difficult to gauge its size because there is no frame of reference in the photo, so I surprised it was large enough to hold a decent sized load of clothes, or, in one load, a king sized set of sheets. Also, the unit is monkey-simple to use.

Cons:

Boy, where to start. The unit is simply more trouble than it's worth. By the time you adapt your washing routine to accommodate its shortcomings, you've rendered the convenience, inconvenient. Just a few of the limitations:

1. It has a very short drain hose, less than 3 feet. Since there is no spin cycle, the unit relies on gravity to empty. This means you must lay the drain hose down to drain. The hose rests upright against the back, on a hook, during use, and you lift it off the hoke and lay it down to drain, against the ground. Consequently, forget about draining this into the bathtub or a sink, as it is neither long enough, nor will provide the necessity gravity, to drain up and over the side of a tub or sink. To get around this, I picked up the unit and literally placed it in my tub, and filled it with water and washed clothes in it while it sat IN the tub enclosure, so that I could lay the very short drain hose down in the tub's drain when I was finished. Which led to limitation no. 2.

2. It has a very short electrical cord. This cord is very short, so, because I had to set the unit in my tub enclosure to wash, it wasn't long enough to also reach the electrical outlet only 6 feet away. A grounded 3 print extension cord was required.

3. The cavity / wash tub of this unit is surprisingly large, so it holds more clothes than you think. This may seem like a pro, however, think about manually filling it with water. There are no hookups required, so you manually pour water into it. This may also seem like a pro, but it actually isn't. For me to wash a MEDIUM sized load of clothes, it took five sloshing full buckets of hot water. Now, think about the time involved in filling five buckets of water from the faucet, and carrying pouring it into the wash tub. I started with a pitcher of water and realized, geez, I'll be at this all day, and switched to buckets.

4. The cycle is 15 minutes long. This is barely enough time for an underpowered washer to get clothes clean. It's fine for lingerie and hand washables, but for anything heavy, you'll want to do two cycles, at least.

5. It says to use 2 tablespoons of detergent, but you'll need much more. Low sudsing is recommended, but I used the same amount I'd use on any other load. Remember, you've just added 5 buckets of water. 2 tablespoons of detergent did NOT get my clothes clean.

6. Once you've laid the hose down and drained the 5 buckets of now dirty water, you'll need to repeat the process and fill it up again with 5 buckets of clean water, and run a 15 minute cycle to rinse the clothes, and then gravity drain again.

7. Because there is no spin cycle, the clothes will be sopping wet, as if they sat in a 5 bucket container of water. Which they did. Hand wringing is required, with a period of drip drying before they'd be ready for a standard dryer. If you use a line, no problem, but they will be sopping. Thus, you wouldn't want to wash heavy towels or jeans in this machine.

8. The force of the wash cycle is surprisingly strong on small loads. The impeller spins the water into a gentle whirlpool effect, swirling your clothes one direction, pausing, and then the other direction. This back-and-forth motion continues for the entire 15 minute cycle. Now, when the load is pretty small, the force of the whirlpool was really pretty decent. However, on a medium and full load, the force just disappeared completely. That's a lot of water to move around, and when you get to 6 or 7 buckets for a full load, the weight of the clothes and water just slow down considerably, and they swirl around slower than the most gentle of gentle cycles. This equates to clothes which do NOT get that clean, and really, are only being swirled in kinda murky soapy water. This is great if you only want to rinse them out, but forget about washing any dirty underwear or diapers with "biological klingons" -- as they will still be there when you're done.

9. Bottom line of all this? I was exhausted with all the effort I went to, to avoid going across the complex to the laundry room. I did NOT save money, because of the considerable investment of my time, energy, and manual labor.

Really, I think the only place I'd recommend this machine, is if you want a simple, fast, easy to use method of rinsing out bathing suits and towels near a pool or campground, and, you've set the unit up outside, on a patio, next to a hose. You can use the hose to fill it up without sloshing buckets, put the bathing suits and towels in it, wash out the chlorine and dirt, and drain it right into the ground or flower bed. Hang out the beach towels and suits, or clothes next to a clothesline, and you're done. Anything "INSIDE" your apartment or house, and you'll just get frustrated.

Remember, at anywhere between $60 and $100 for this machine you're better off using that to put down on a real compact washing machine with a water hookup, legit drain hose, and spin cycle.

So, I've got one more appliance that doesn't do what I really needed. I have once again "got what I could afford" instead of "got what I need." I'm now out the money, and, still have to use the laundry

Whirlpool Duet Steam : WFW9700VW 27in Front-Load Washer - White w/Brushed Chrome Review

Whirlpool Duet Steam : WFW9700VW 27in Front-Load Washer - White w/Brushed ChromeThis machine broke on the SECOND wash. After hours of being on the phone with Whirlpool and Grant's Appliances, neither one would give us a new washer, they all wanted us to get the new part.2 1/2 weeks later the part finally arrives...it broke again, same code, 10 washes later.I paid $1,400 for this washer, it is a shame that some American Companies no longer stand behind their products.DON'T BUY THIS MACHINE... I think I am convinced to buy the Miele.I just bought a vaccum and dishwasher from Miele...they are simplye DIVINE and WONDERFUL and their craftmanship is SUPERB! My gut told me to do the same with the washer and dryer...I just knew so many people who did have some type of Whirlpool and liked them?

I am just so beside myself at the moment...I had researched several machines before purchasing this one. However, I was mislead by Whirlpool Corporation...I called their customer service line to inquire if the 9700 models were made in Germany or Mexico...they told me GERMANY, the main reason I agreed to purchase this machine (wanted the 9600, but no longer available). When I got home to see my new washer, it said "Made in Mexico"It appears that Whirlpool had purposely reported false information.I will also be contacting the Better Business Bureau and reporting a claim against Whirlpool Corp and their "just tell the cumstomer lies" tatics.

Samsung WF448AA 27" Front-Load Washer with 4.5 cu. ft. Capacity, 14 Wash Cycles, 8 Options, 5 Temperature Settings, Steam Washing, SilverCare/VRT Technology, LCD Display and Diamond Drum Design Review

Samsung WF448AA 27' Front-Load Washer with 4.5 cu. ft. Capacity, 14 Wash Cycles, 8 Options, 5 Temperature Settings, Steam Washing, SilverCare/VRT Technology, LCD Display and Diamond Drum DesignOne day, my wife decided to get this humongous blanket. It was so big that it wouldn't fit in our regular top load washer. It was one of those blankets that you had to wash every two weeks and it was getting to be a hassle to go to the laundromat so we bit the bullet and decided to get a large front loader. When we got our old washer I didn't think we needed to spend a whole lot of money on it so we just got a middle of the line GE. This time, I thought, what the heck, let's just get the top of the line one so we wouldn't have any buyer's remorse about not getting the best. And there was quite a big difference in cost, $500 for our old washer 3 years ago to $1400 for this one.

I researched all the washers carefully and read a lot of reviews and decided to go for a front loader, which is supposed to wash better because the clothes are tossed over and around instead of just being swirled around, and it's supposed to save water. And based on the reviews, I thought Samsung came out ahead in terms of quality. Mind you, the difference is not that much. There is no brand which is terrible in quality from what I read of online reviews, all are quite good, I just liked Samsung better. It's also somewhat subjective as I just liked the way it looked.

What I like about it.
1) Silvercare. I really like that fact that the laundry can be sanitized with silver ions instead of using heat because heat does terrible things to clothes. Especially families with kids, you've got mud and dirt and underwear, and adult clothes mixed with children's clothes. This was a very important selling point to me.
2) 4.5 cu. ft. capacity. I wanted to get the biggest size possible. This was one of the reasons which I didn't go one level down, even though the next level down was 4.3 cu.ft., which was just a little smaller. But as I said, I didn't want any second thoughts in the future, so I just got the biggest one.
3) Bells and whistles. This washer has a lot of features and functions: steam clean, bedding, quick wash, delay start, etc. in addition to the regular cycles. To be honest, I'm not using 90% of them now. I don't wear any fancy clothes and my laundry loads are either towels, every day clothing or underwear. What I do like is that I can customize the function. I chose "normal" but found that it didn't spin them enough so I increased the spin level by one. I also use the "hand wash" function, but found I needed to increase the spin level by one too. There are like 20 functions and you can customize them all to some degree.
4) Yeah, I like watching the clothes go around and it's relaxing. This is my first front loader ever. I wonder if I'll ever get tired of watch clothes go around.
5) I forget what they call this, but the washer resets itself if the clothes get bunched up. And that's one thing I disliked about my toploader. Sometimes the clothes would get all bunched up on one side and the toploader will throw itself out of whack and make a lot of noise. This one can reset itself.

Cons:
None really so far, but a few comments.
1) Water saver, it uses less water than your regular top loader. I just can't get used to the idea that clothes can be thoroughly washed without them being completely soaked and when you watch through the glass window you'll see that the water never fills up the drum; the clothes do get wet, they just don't get immersed totally in water. In fact, you never see a water line through the window. Other reviewers in other forums have made the same comment.
2) Noise. I thought this would be whisper quiet, but it isn't quieter than my toploader. It has to do with the fact that the clothes tumble around and that's what makes the noise. My old GE which agitated (the drum would rotate as well as go side to side) was just as quiet during the wash cycle. It has vibration reduction but again, it doesn't noticeably vibrate less than my GE. However, both this Samsung and my 3 year old GE are much noticeably quieter than my last last washer from more than 10 years before, which demonstrates that technology has increased a lot; and also if you have a washer more than 10 years old you should seriously look at a new one!
3) Capacity. It may have a 4.5 cu.ft. capacity but it's a lot harder to load more in a front loader because you're trying to load stuff in sideways whereas with a top loader you just fill it to the top. Fill the little things like socks first and big things like towels at the top. I feel that even though my old washer was a 3.3 cu.ft, this one doesn't wash 36% more clothing.

Overall.
For the value minded, is this functionally 2.8X better than my old top loader? ($1400 vs. $500). I would say no. It's got more functions but I think that most people can make do with a middle of the line washer.

However, getting a new washer nowadays is a lot more about function. It's visceral, it's emotional, it's subjective. For 2.8X the money, you get a washer that subjectively looks a lot better ($500 washers don't come in 4 different colors, and just don't have the same oomph.) You get this because of the features, the looks and the fulfillment that you've arrived (in the laundry room). Laundry doesn't become a chore anymore, it's an appointment with the latest technology from Samsung. You don't merely wash your clothes, you clean them, you sanitize them. And that's what the extra $900 is all about. But me, I don't have to justify anything, she who must be obeyed had spoken.

Finally, and this was what sold me - our last last washer lasted almost 10 years. Washers last for a long time. I didn't want to buy something cheap and then kick myself for the next 9 years wishing I bought something else. If this last 10 years, a difference of a few hundred dollars is negligible and this is a machine you'll use every week. This few hundred dollar difference pales in comparison to getting a washer repairman out. The last time I called it was $140 for the guy to come out and then parts and labor, so spend what you need to spend (within reason) and get the washer you want and the one with the better reputation.

Miele : W3033 24in Front Load Washer - White [German Engineering - Built to Last] Review

Miele : W3033 24in Front Load Washer - WhiteBought My washer 4 years ago, and every year I have to have it fixed. From the first month it started to leak out the front door onto the floor. Sure, the company(Miele) sent someone to fix it and replace the rubber liner in the door, but four times now ??? The warrantee is now gone, and Im stuck with a lemon, a leaky one. I paid BIG BUCKS for a piece of junk. I will NEVER buy a Miele product again....never! I should take it back to Weir's in Tacoma where I bought it, and demand another one.

G.E. WHRE5550KWW 4.1 Cu. Ft. Top Load Washer (White) Review

G.E. WHRE5550KWW 4.1 Cu. Ft. Top Load WasherFirst, let me say that historically I've never bought G.E. appliances---especially laundry appliances. My youthful years spent working at Sears as an appliance delivery/installation technician (1986-1991) showed me more than a fair share of fairly new but recently deceased G.E. washers. I remember one customer who had only had hers about a year (and was obviously rich enough to simply buy another rather than repair it). I know that all of this was nearly 15 to 20 years ago and much can change with a company's quality (remember when Maytag appliances were still good and Hyundai cars were horrible?), still, it kept me away from G.E. washers for many years. Ironically, G.E. has built for many years probably the best line of refrigerators and ranges in the industry.

If you're reading this review then it's obvious that you know a thing or two about washers. I don't really need to go into the hows and whys, but I'd like to focus this review on what is unique about this washer.

1. Stainless steel tub!!! Hey, I'm a fool for a stainless steel tub, although I can't really say that they are any better than others. Remember the cool Speed Queens and their once-patented stainless steel tubs?

2. Lack of agitator/"Hydrowave." One benefit of front loading washers is that they can wash more clothes, yet get them cleaner and treat them more gently than a top loading washer with an agitator. Well, this machine is still a top loader but lacks an agitator---at least what we know as an agitator. I suppose the little "nub" in the middle of the tub is the agitator. At any rate, this machine employs what G.E. calls its "Hydrowave" system. Most likely, this is yet another industry buzzword.

3. Super capacity! According to the manual, this has a capacity of 4.1 cubic feet. That's big! Other "super capacity" washers are usually around 3.5 cubic feet. This extra capacity is achieved, of course, by the lack of the traditional agitator.

4. Quiet! In terms of quietness, this machine is what I'll call "library quiet." It really is wonderful not to hear the "clunka clunka" from the Maytag piece of garbage it replaced! It sits perfectly still like a good little church boy during the spin cycle.

5. Drier clothes. No, this is not a one-in-all machine like I've seen in motor homes and Parisian apartments, but this thing gets clothes drier after the spin cycle than any washer I've ever known. Drier clothes after washing means less time in the dryer and, ultimately, less energy consumed.

6. Options. In addition to the multiple cycles and settings on this machine, two extra "bells and whistles" that may prove handy are the "Extra Rinse" option and/or the "Extra Spin" option. I've not used them yet, but certainly see the benefit.

***** WORD TO THE WISE ***** Do not overfill your washing machine! 4.1 cubic feet doesn't mean that you can force 50 pounds of dirty laundry into the maw of this appliance---or any other washer. Nothing shortens the lifespan of a washing machine more than overfilling the machine, yet almost everyone does it. The rule is to fill it no more than halfway from the bottom of the tub. If fact, this washer only fills slightly more than halfway on "Super" capacity. This is probably the reason some reviewers have complained that the machine left some articles of laundry dry in their machine.

Speed Queen AWN412 Review

Speed Queen AWN412We had the front loaders from LG, steam model, and do not miss them one bit. My wife went out of town for a week, June 09, and I was in charge. About the third day of laundry, long story but we had been remodeling and I figured it was a good time to do a top to bottom house cleaning. Well, after many loads in the LGs I threw the towel in. I called my local family appliance store in Chelsea Mi and asked them what they recommended in regards to a new washer and new electric dryer as I had had it with the front loaders. He told me the Speed Queens are the way to go, and no, he did not sell me the LGs. I asked about colors... He said, "Sure, you can have any color you want as long as it is white". I told him on the phone that I will take them and asked if he could deliver them tomorrow. The next day I was redoing laundry! And the LGs were sold in a day or two on Craigs List, paying for our new Speed Queens.

Now that we have the Speed Queen washer AWN412, and matching electric dryer ADE3LR, our clothes are now clean and smell fresh. And from many months of usage I would say that the Speed Queens actually use less energy. A typical load of wash in the front loader took near an hour to complete, and then near an hour to get them dry. Sure you may use less water with the front loaders, but we can now do a load of clothes and dry them in an hour, saving time and energy. And again, our clothes and towels are so so much cleaner and that musty front loader smell is now history.

Oh, my wife loves them too, turns out she hated the front loaders as much as I did!

LG : WM2455HW 27in Front-Load Washer - White Review

LG : WM2455HW 27in Front-Load Washer - WhiteMy old Maytag finally died after about 10 years.I guess that's a good shelf life although the only thing wrong was that the transmission was leaking and getting tiny oil stains on my clothes.Apparently you can't purchase new "seals" and just have to replace the whole transmission which is, of course, cost prohibitive. My wife wanted a front loader to save on the utility bills. The reason we settled on the LG was the larger 4.2 cu ft. There were only one or two models that were bigger but they were way over $1000 which was our cut off.We bought it at Sears because they have, in my opinion, the BEST customer care out there.Anytime we have to buy a major appliance Sears is where we go.Anyway - here are the perks:
1.I cannot believe how little water this thing uses.I'd never seen a front loader in action before but instead of an entire basin filling with water if you can imagine it's almost like there are a bunch of tiny "water guns" circling the rim that occasionally shoot some water out on the clothes.
2.There is a spot for detergent, another for bleach, another for fabric softener, and one extra spot that I put a little Borax in.All this is in a tiny "drawer" that opens and closes at the top of the machine.
3.It spins the clothes for about a minute to automatically determine what the load size is and adjusts the water level accordingly.
4.There are TONS of different wash and rinse combinations. Most take at least an hour to do but they also have a "speed wash" that took 20 minutes from start to finish.I used this cycle once after my wife had an allergic reaction to a new shower soap we tried. Some of the allergens were in the sheets but they weren't soiled or dirty and consequently that option came in very useful.
5.It has INCREDIBLY FAST spin cycles that get the clothes alot closer to dry which means less dryer time.
6.I think it's pretty quiet although we have it in our basement so that's not a critical issue.
7.There's a child lock button you can press so that if you have small children that think it's fun to press all the different lighted flashing buttons they can do so to their hearts content without messing up your washing instructions.
The CONS:(I should point out that these have to do with ALL Front Loaders and nothing really specific to the LG).
1.First and foremost THE PRICE.We paid just under $1000 for the washer itself. When I was leaving Sears I noticed that most of the top loaders were less than $500.True our utility bills will be less but it'll be quite a while before we make up that loss.
2.These washers have so many bells and whistles that they all now have little computers instead of just some simple nobs.To me I worry that there is now alot more that can go wrong with them and might be costly to repair but before buying a front loader I checked with our repair guy who said to date they haven't really had any problems with them.
3.Once you hit "start" you're committed.Unlike the top loader that will allow you to add a few more clothes that you might have forgotten - this one locks the front door after you hit start and won't unlock until it's done spinning.

All in all I have no complaints so far (other than price). It does a great job getting the clothes clean and at a fraction of the utility cost that our old top loader did.Let's keep our fingers crossed that I get at least another 10 years out of this one!

GE WDRR2500KWW King-Size Capacity Top Load White Washer Review

GE WDRR2500KWW King-Size Capacity Top Load White WasherI bought this washer from Amazon.com shipped via seller Abt Electronics in April 2009, but did not receive the washer until May 2009.

The 1st delivery man forgot to come on the scheduled delivery day. I waited at the house all day and took a day off for nothing. I rescheduled and they gave me another all-day appointment and I told them to forget it. The phone operator said I live at the end of the route... After telling them to cancel the order, they agreed to come in the morning. The 2nd delivery attempt was relatively smooth and the delivery man was fairly efficient.

Now the washer...I ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS WASHER. I wish I did cancel this order.

This GE monstrosity is the worst washer I have ever bought in my life and I have bought many since I provide washer and dryer in my rentals. I will NEVER buy another GE washer.

First of all, it cleans HORRIBLY, if it cleans at all.

To get anything somewhat clean, everything has to be washed twice ALL the time and I must use the highest level water and rinse twice.

Secondly, it has ripped many items of clothing.

Last but not least, it is extremely noisy and shakes violently during the spinning cycle.

I wish there was a review on this item to warn me from the WORST purchase of my life.

I'm NOT buying the extended warranty because I want this washer to die, so I can get something else. I thought about donating it to the local shelter, but I hate to give them something as CRAPPY as this machine.

This GE washer simply belongs in the LANDFILL.

Samsung : WF218ANB 4.0 cu. ft. Front Load Washer - Breakwater Blue Review

Samsung : WF218ANB 4.0 cu. ft. Front Load Washer - Breakwater BlueIt was in our house 1-day, and the drum on the washing machine would not go into a high spin, so all the clothes kept coming out dripping wet.Sears sent out repair man who had to call Samsung for assistance....... After figuring out it wasn't operator error or machine malfunction, the Samsung Rep wanted to know the room temperature of our wash room.the repair guy told them it was 65 degree according to his meter with a cold water temperature of 43 degrees coming into the house.Samsung Rep told us, we could not use cold water to wash our clothes... EVER. The ball bearrings that spin the drum are in oil and because we live in Upstate NY where it gets cold, NOT ALASKA cold, but cold..... the oil is thickening in their machine and CAN'T go into a high spin.WHAT????!!!!The machine needs a temperature of 72 degrees to operate properly! They are aware of this problem, they are working on it, but don't have a solution yet!So I guess they sleep okay at night knowing at least the folks in California who buy their machines love them. Finally, CR and their glowing report, I have to say I'm dissapointed in them too.So they are getting picked up tomorrow and I'm thankful we bought them now and not in the Summer and discovered this way after 30-days.So, as a good customer, I'm trying to help Samsung with a solution.... I will be sure to tell everyone I know about this and warn everyone not to buy a Samsung washing machine (unless you live in a hot climate OR you always wash with HOT water).I can still hear my repair guy laughing...

Haier XQJ50-31 Agitator 1-2/3-Cubic-Foot Portable Washer Review

Haier XQJ50-31 Agitator 1-2/3-Cubic-Foot Portable WasherIf you are like me, you are scouring these reviews trying to decide if this is the right product for you- if it will arrive safely, be easy to hook up, and work as promised.

Since this is a fairly large purchase for most, I thought I would add my own review, as a person who seriously debated buying this machine based on the reviews about damages and other difficulties. After much consideration, I finally ordered and received this washing machine and there are a few things I can tell you.

Firstly, it is going to come with some dings, almost guaranteed. As another reviewer mentioned, the tub is free floating inside and there is absolutely nothing to stop it from swinging into the metal housing during shipping. And you have to know it will get bumped hard enough in shipping to swing that tub around at least a little. It would have taken a dollar's worth of styrofoam to secure the tub inside, it is a shame they don't take care of that little problem. So, just resolve yourself to this idea and you won't be disappointed. Fortunately, the dings are only cosmetic, and you might have only a few, or you might have a lot. My machine arrived dinged up, but works perfectly. Most of the dings were caused by the tub pushing from inside out, but there were also a couple of indentions obviously from things hitting the box during shipping. Though I am making a thorough description of the damage, overall, it was not devastating.

Secondly, it's not that hard to hook up, and I found the instruction book adequate. The first thing you must do when you receive the machine, after you unpack it, is to lay it on its side an put the casters on. There are two stopper-type feet, and two adjustable level feet on it, out of the box. The adjustable level feet come right off. The stopper type feet will require a pipe wrench to remove. Don't even think you can do it with your hands or a cheap pair of pliers. They won't budge. But get yourself a pipe wrench and turn counter-clockwise and they will begin to unscrew, no problem. At this time, it will help you to have an electric screwdriver handy to mount the bottom (noise cancelling) panel. You can do it by hand if you want, but if you are doing it alone it will be difficult for you to hold it and put the screws in. Also, the electric screwdriver has a little more force, so if your frame is slightly dented, you can almost correct it by forcing the screws into the correct position.

Voila! Once you put the machine upright, it rolls very easily! The next task is to roll it over to the sink and set up your connections. Personally, I don't see any benefit to having a Y adapter if you only have one faucet. The hot and cold water are going to mix together before going to the intakes anyway, so what is the point? I hooked up only one hose, to the cold water intake. (There is a screw-on plug included for the other intake if you choose to hook up only one.) When the wash cycle begins, I have the hot water on, then after the tub fills I turn the hot water off, and the cold water on for the remaining 2 rinse cycles.

Next, the quick-connect adapter for the faucet is not difficult to install. You simply unscrew the aerator off your faucet, and add the quick-connect version which screws right in to replace it. Then attach the other piece of the quick-connect to the end of the cold water hose you just installed on the back of the washer. Now this hose will clip on to your faucet in one motion. Just push down the white piece, slip it over the piece on the faucet, and release. It makes a tight, reliable connection. If you leave the faucet piece on (you can still run water through it) then each time you want to wash, all you have to do is click the quick-connect on and you are ready to go. So, no worries about that part, it is a snap.

Now, the drain hose is another thing. It is too inflexible, and too short to be convenient. If you use this hose, be sure to use something to weight it so it remains in the sink when the water starts coming through! It is made of slick accordion plastic which does not stay in place easily. Myself, I went and bought some thick black rubber tubing in a longer length. A hose clamp is included, be sure to use it to secure whatever hose you might choose to use. If you don't clamp the hose on tightly, you will have a flood as soon as the pump kicks in.

OK, so that's what you can expect once the machine arrives. It seems like a bit of work, and all in all it will probably take you an hour and half before you get your first wash in. But that's where it pays off. This little machine washes just beautifully. The clothes are very clean after the generous wash and two rinse cycles. It spins them very well, so the clothes dry in 6-8 hours after you hang them up. (If you are an apartment dweller with no dryer, do a search on the internet for a "gull-wing clothes drying rack" for a neat solution for drying.)

I have to agree that the design on the detergent drawer could be much much better, but it works. It also has a fabric softener dispenser and a bleach dispenser! The electronic panel is just plain cool, as well. Like another reviewer, I hope it lasts a long time. There is also an available soak cycle which you can add to any of the regular cycles, which is very handy. When it comes to washing, this machine is A+. I really could not be happier with its performance. The tub actually holds much more than I anticipated-- I would guess about 2/3 of a "normal" washer.

I found this machine a good investment, considering the cost and inconvenience of going to a laundromat. If you are living in an apartment without hook-ups and are spending hours in the laundromat, this will change your life in a good way.

I will try to come back after some months and comment on the long term performance, but I am not anticipating any problems.

**UPDATE**

6 months later, and I am still very happy with this machine.Thrilled actually, not to have seen the inside of a laundromat for a good long while.

The only issue I have had is that if the machine is not on a nice level piece of flooring, it will have balance issues.Once I recognized what was causing the problem, I had to memorize the "sweet spot" on the floor in front of the sink where the machine has to sit precisely in order to avoid any balance problems. My kitchen floor is anything but level. As long as it is in the zone, it can hold an amazing amount of clothes and spin clean without a hitch. If it is not level, I can have even a small amount of clothes in it and it acts up by refilling itself over and over because it thinks the clothes are out of balance and it is trying to correct it by adding water (self-balancing feature.)So if you are having similar trouble, experiment moving the machine 3-4" this way or that, until you find the place it likes and it will perform like a champ.

Using my drying rack and opening the windows to create a cross-breeze in the house, the clothes are dry in 5-6 hours. There are other bonuses to this method. Not putting them in the dryer is also causing less wear and color loss to the fabrics, and stains do not set...so if you miss one, you can get it out the next time without the dryer having "cooked" it in forever. Then there's the simple environmental and cost savings of not running a dryer as well.

Thumbs up for this machine, dings and all.Kick your feet up in your favorite chair while the washer is working and think about how great it is not to be in some sweaty laundromat full of college kids.
